Beer, the creative flow and music

I’ve reconnected with someone from high school who rocks my socks. Turns out she knew right off the bat that she wanted to be a designer (lucky girl) and went to Parsons (even luckier!) and now works with children’s books. All badass.

Luckily for her, she walked back into my life right as I discovered that hey, beer is pretty tasty and it helps my creative process. Very good timing indeed. She helped refine my color palette for luminos (the modular lighting system I told you about earlier) and I’m feeling pretty good about these last couple weeks of the semester. I just need to get my act together and pull awesome stuff out of my bootay. Pics to come.

I don’t know if its completely unrelated but I’ve picked up my guitar again after quite a bit of musical down time. Wrote a song about a lost love who is getting married. I’m sure the angst is helping fuel the creativity as much as the beer. I’ve been listening to a lot of indie stuff too…there is so much talent out there. To name a few bands I’m addicted to right now: Passion Pit, Vampire Weekend, Chromeo, Kate Miller-Heidke (and husband on guitar), Tokyo Police Club and my staple Ani D. Love that girl to pieces.

I’m still looking into turning this into a sound blog…at least on my end. My fellow admin hasn’t posted in a while and I plan on bugging her about it. A classmate suggested I stop stalling and just jump into creating sound with my Mac. Dunno that it’s what I’m going for, but it can’t hurt to start experimenting. I’m much more interested in found sound and just carrying around a digital recorder with me everywhere I go and then isolating interesting bits for my never-gonna-happen soundtrack for the even-less-likely stop motion typography film I’ll never make.

We’ll see how that goes…

school and freelancing

It has been a while. I think the creative juices are flowing a bit more now since I’m back in school. No more slaving over a predetermined branding system. Part time anyway…

I’m in a branding class this semester and it was DREADFUL for the first 5 weeks. Just now is it getting exciting. I’ve decided on a lighting system I thought up on a drunken night and I’m pretty hyped about it. The company I faux-created designs bespoke lighting solutions, and I’m branding their modular offering. Basically my product is for commercial spaces where an entire wall is made into a light box with a grid over it. In these slots plexiglass triangles and squares can be arranged into patterns. TA-DA! I haven’t decided on colors or even the name actually….I will update as I work on it :)

Let’s be professional…and not specific.

Two out of Three elevators do not work in my office building, so it takes roughly an hour to get upstairs.  Classic.

I work for an online advertising agency in NYC, but in order to expand my horizons (and actually do something from 9-5) I have been on the market for a new creative position for some time now.  Evidently, it would seem that Coach is on the market for new designers, so I decided to send my resume in.  However, I’m not expecting much because for some reason job descriptions always make it seem like the position is excellent for someone with no higher than a high school degree yet this is how the interview will really go:

Position for Sales Creative:

Me:  “I have been a designer for about (x) years, as you can see on my resume I am familiar with design software such as…”

Them:  “Right, I noticed it on your resume.  We are also looking for someone who is familiar with XML, HTML, DML, DXTML, YTSXLOGY, -insert programming word here-”

Me:  “oh…well I was under the assumption you were just looking for a creative designe-”

Them:  “Well thank you for your time, we’ll call you when we come to a decision”

Great.  So I am keeping my eyes and ears open ;-)

tired eyes and moola

had some drama last night and couldn’t sleep. it is 3am and i am officially addicted to moola.com

let me know if it hooks you too, it is like bringing atlantic city to your house!! brilliant!

another interesting note is i looked up home remedies to relieve tired eyes and found something i used to do as a kid when i had severe allergies. if you take two caffeinated black tea bags, soak them in hot water so they release their natural goodness and then stick them in the freezer to help reduce swelling, it will create the ideal pick me up for tired eyes. i also read that cold milk helps too and an added bonus is that milk will naturally bleach those ugly under eye circles if you use it over time. i remember reading somewhere a long time ago that madonna takes milk baths…it must work! lol    oh, and spoons in the freezer is an even quicker fix. hold them over your eyes until the spoons warm up and you should see the puffiness go down.

ok, finally heading to bed. g’night. i will probably be doing all of the above when i wake up in the morning……….
